03Price

What does a wood chip boiler cost?

The price is calculated case by case, because it depends on the whole plant and not just the boiler. That is why we start with a free heat-load calculation and then send a quotation for your plant.

What drives the price

  1. 01

    The output

The output determines the size of the boiler and whether one boiler or several in cascade are needed.

  2. 02

    Boiler, burner or hot air

A new wood chip boiler, the BU wood chip burner for an existing industrial boiler, or hot air from AERO and LATherm wood chips.

  3. 03

The fuel store and feed system

Spring agitators up to 180 m³, scraper-floor stores up to 500 m³, a carport or a store in the heating plant – and the screws to the boiler.

  4. 04

    The accumulator tank

The guideline is 20–30 litres per kW of boiler output. The tank gives longer run times and fewer starts and stops.

  5. 05

    The boiler room

An existing boiler room, a container or a ready-built heating plant of 200 kW–2 MW.

  6. 06

    The installation

From mechanical installation to a turnkey contract with buried pipework, chimney and substations. Local plumbing and electrical contractors can also install to our drawings.

  7. 07

    The options

For example a built-in electrostatic filter, cyclone, central ash discharge and internet connection – and for IDRO, bio-oil as a backup fuel in the same boiler body.

  8. 08

    The service

A major service once or twice a year, preferably with a service agreement. We service plants all over Sweden, including other makes.

Keeping the cost down

Use the boiler room you already have. If you have an industrial boiler, the BU wood chip burner can replace the oil or gas burner so that the boiler stays. Local plumbing and electrical contractors can install to our drawings, and an electrostatic filter built into IDRO costs less and takes up less space than an external filter unit.

Wood chips or electricity

A wood chip boiler is built for several biofuels, so you can burn whatever is cheapest and easiest to get hold of. An electric boiler or a heat pump can only run on electricity.

Where the boiler can stand

  • 01

    In an existing boiler room

The wood chip boiler goes into the boiler room you have, with the store alongside or some distance away. IDRO can also stand on a platform that is slid into the boiler room.

  • 02

Wood chip boiler in a container

IDRO can be delivered ready in a container. As construction and rental heating, the wood chip boiler comes in a container of 200–1,000 kW, to rent or buy.

  • 03

    A ready-built boiler house

A heating plant is the whole boiler room in a building of its own, 200 kW–2 MW. It is tested and fine-tuned before delivery and lifted into place by crane.

05The fuel

Which chips can the boiler burn?

The boilers are made for wood chips of size P16S and P31S (G50+). The PelleTech boilers handle chips with up to 40 % moisture content.

The size

Coarser chips work too, with larger screws – from 38 kW Multiauto has a 150 mm stoker screw. The BU wood chip burner handles chips up to P45S. We plan coarser material together with you.

The moisture content

The wetter the chips, the lower the output and the more fuel is used. Dry chips under cover give more heat, and ventilation in the store helps. For really wet chips there is the Biotherm burner, which burns extremely moist wood chips – and horse manure with up to 60 % moisture content.

Moving stepped grate

Multiauto and IDRO have a moving stepped grate. It moves during operation, cleans itself continuously without the boiler stopping and handles more, wetter and dirtier fuels – even chips with bark. A fixed grate does not move during operation, and that limits the fuels that can be burnt.

Other fuels

Multiauto also burns pellets, logging residues, sawdust, wood shavings, peat and residues, and firewood can be added by hand together with chips or pellets. IDRO also burns pellets, bark, logging residues, sawdust, waste wood, energy crops, residues and crops.

06Fuel stores

Chip stores and feed systems.

In wood chip heating the fuel takes up space. That is why the chip store and the feed system are planned together with the boiler, to suit your site and your chips.

From the store to the boiler

A feed screw takes the chips from the store to a sealed rotary valve, and the stoker screw carries them on into the boiler. The rotary valve and the sprinkler, which is required in Sweden, protect against burn-back.

The feed system

The size of the store

A spring agitator holds up to 180 m³ and is 2–6 m in diameter, usually 3 or 4 m. A 500 m³ scraper-floor store holds roughly a year's chips for a 250 kW boiler.

Size your fuel store

The store in the heating plant

The store can be built into the heating plant, as in Biobox ALL INclusive with 17–30 m³. The chips can also arrive in containers, with an intermediate store that keeps the feed going while a container is exchanged.

The store in the heating plant

Do you have wood residues and pallets? The Shredder tears them up, and a conveyor can carry the material on to the chip store.

09FAQ

Questions about wood chip boilers.

More answers about fuels, installation and economics in the FAQ and the knowledge base.

What does a wood chip boiler cost?

The price is calculated case by case, because it depends on the output, the type of boiler, the fuel store and feed system, the accumulator tank, the boiler room and how much of the installation we do. That is why we start with a free heat-load calculation and then send a quotation for your plant.

The heat itself costs approx. SEK 0.30/kWh with bought-in chips and SEK 0.15–0.20/kWh with chips from your own forest.

How big a wood chip boiler do we need?

We work that out in the heat-load calculation. Our wood chip boilers range from 20 kW – Multiauto in seven versions up to 200 kW – to 4.6 MW with four IDRO 1,150 kW in cascade.

How many chips will we use in a year?

Count on roughly two cubic metres of chips per kW of boiler output a year, up to three with poorer chips. A 100 kW boiler therefore uses around 200 m³ of chips a year. Actual consumption depends on the quality and moisture content of the chips.

How big a chip store do we need?

It depends on the output and how often you want to fill it. A spring agitator holds up to 180 m³ and is 2–6 m in diameter, usually 3 or 4 m. A scraper-floor store holds up to 500 m³ – roughly a year's chips for a 250 kW boiler.

The store can also be built into a heating plant, or be a carport where the chips stay dry.

Which chips can we burn?

Wood chips of size P16S and P31S (G50+). The PelleTech boilers handle up to 40 % moisture content, Multiauto 30–40 % depending on fuel. Coarser chips work with larger screws, and the BU wood chip burner handles chips up to P45S.

For extremely moist chips there is the Biotherm burner, which also burns horse manure with up to 60 % moisture content.

Can a wood chip boiler burn pellets?

Yes. Multiauto burns wood chips and pellets as well as logging residues, sawdust, wood shavings, peat and residues, and firewood can be added by hand together with chips or pellets. IDRO also burns pellets, bark, logging residues, sawdust, waste wood, energy crops, residues and crops – with bio-oil as backup in the same boiler body.

What is needed to install a wood chip boiler?

A boiler room – an existing one, a container or a ready-built heating plant – a chip store with a feed system, an accumulator tank of around 20–30 litres per kW and a chimney. The feed system needs a sealed rotary valve and a sprinkler against burn-back, which is required in Sweden.

We design in 3D and 2D with plumbing and electrical drawings and take care of installation, commissioning and training – or local plumbing and electrical contractors install to the drawings.

Can we keep our existing boiler?

Yes, if it is an industrial boiler for hot water, steam or thermal oil. The PelleTech BU wood chip burner, 200 kW–2.2 MW in eight sizes, connects to the boiler and replaces the oil or gas burner. We supply the fuel store and the feed system around it.

Are wood chip boilers available in containers or as ready-built boiler houses?

Yes. We build heating plants of 200 kW–2 MW in our own workshop: standard, timber-built, container plants or Biobox ALL INclusive with a built-in store of 17–30 m³. They are built around PelleTech IDRO or AERO and tested and fine-tuned before delivery.

For mobile hot air there is LATherm wood chips in a container, 150–750 kW.

Can you rent a wood chip boiler?

Yes, as construction and rental heating: 200–1,000 kW, water-based heating or hot air, the whole plant or parts of it. The agreement is adapted to the installation, the rental period and the availability of fuel.

How much maintenance does a wood chip boiler need?

The boiler ignites, feeds, cleans itself and discharges the ash automatically. You top up the fuel and empty the ash. A major service is needed once or twice a year, preferably with a service agreement. We service plants all over Sweden, including other makes.

What should we compare between wood chip boilers?

Look at the grate – a moving stepped grate handles wetter and dirtier chips than a fixed one – at the feed system and burn-back protection, at automatic cleaning and ash discharge, and at who provides service, documentation and support after delivery.

Plan the fuel logistics as well: how the chips are delivered, stored and fed to the boiler.
