In a scraper-floor store, wedge-shaped scrapers on the floor of the store are driven back and forth by hydraulics. They push the wood chips to a cross screw, which receives the fuel and carries it on to the boiler.

The scrapers move back and forth across the floor. The wood chips are pushed forward to the cross screw, which feeds them on to the boiler.

On the way to the boiler, the wood chips pass through a tight rotary valve, and the stoker screw feeds them into the burner. Larger chip sizes call for larger screws – industrial boilers have feed screws of up to 180 mm. The feed system from store to boiler

The rule of thumb: wood chips in cubic metres per year come to roughly twice the boiler output in kilowatts, and up to three times with poorer chips. Actual consumption depends on the quality and moisture content of the fuel and on how the plant is used.
