The Biotherm burner for horse manure, 250–1,000 kW

From manureto heat.

Biotherm's unique burner burns the manure and bedding from the stalls on the farm. The heat goes to stables, riding arenas and homes – instead of the manure being stored, hauled away and landfilled.

01The heat source

Every horse isa heat source.

The manure from an average-sized horse provides fuel for roughly 4 kW, around the clock.

The waste becomes heat on site – with no landfill and no transport.

Approximate values according to Biotherm, for an average-sized horse and a facility with 40 horses.

02Moisture content

The manurecan be wet.

Horse manure holds 30–75 % moisture. The burner burns it at up to 60 % – and mixing in wood chips controls the moisture content.

Moisture content in per cent. The manure from the stalls holds 30–75 %. The burner burns manure with up to 60 % moisture content; the moisture content is controlled by mixing in wood chips.

The mixer

The fuel is blended in the mixer – wood chips and horse manure in the right proportions – before it reaches the burners.

Drying and pelleting

The manure can also become pellets. It is dried in our own dryer and pressed into pellets, which can be stored from summer to winter. Example: from a 500 kW burner, around 130 kW goes to the dryer – the surplus heats the buildings.

Built for thewet fuel.

Biotherm's unique burner for horse manure, extremely wet wood chips and slaughterhouse waste – and it can be adapted for more fuels. The image shows two burners in stainless steel, with cover plates.

Two burners side by side, with a shared secondary channel in front of the boiler – here in three steps. Biotherm designs and engineers the plant in 3D.

From the fuel store to combustion.

The fuel is loaded into the stores outdoors. Conveyor screws carry the material to the mixer pockets and then on into the burners.

After the boiler, the flue gases pass through a cyclone and a bag filter. The whole chain is shown on the page about the burner for slaughterhouse waste – it is the same burner.

05Experience

Over 20 yearswith horse manure.

The burner was developed together with Luleå University of Technology for combustion as close to 100 % as possible – whatever the fuel.

We are a family business in its fourth generation, with offices in Västerås and Luleå. We developed the burner ourselves – and we are still there once the heat is on.

  1. Since 1976Sustainable heating from the family business
  2. 1996A 15-year collaboration with Luleå University of Technology begins
  3. Over 20 yearsExperience with horse manure as a fuel
