The springssweep the floor.
In a spring agitator, the spring arms rotate across the floor of the store and sweep the wood chips in towards the screw, which feeds them on to the boiler.

01The sweep
Up to six metresin diameter.
The spring arms rotate around the hub, across the floor of the store, and sweep the wood chips in towards the screw in its channel. The agitator comes in diameters from 2 to 6 m – the standard is 3 or 4 m, for most boilers.

- Not required – the spring agitators are stable. A support floor still gives a cleaner store and allows ventilation for drying.

From the screw tothe boiler – and how much.
Discharging the wood chips
- The screw in its channelCarries the wood chips out of the store, towards the boiler.
- The rotary valveFully sealed and safe against burn-back – together with a sprinkler.
- The stoker screwFeeds the fuel into the burner.
For wood chips of size G50+. Larger chip sizes call for larger screws.

Wood chips in cubic metres per year come to roughly twice the boiler output in kilowatts – up to three times with poorer chips.
A worked example based on the rule of thumb. Actual consumption depends on the quality and moisture content of the fuel and on how the plant is used.
